fundamentals of firewalls, intrusion detection, perimeter security, effective
network security policies, and what is meant by “hardening” operating systems.
The presentation will also discuss the most common mistakes and misconceptions
that companies make when assessing or implementing their security requirements.
In addition, we will demonstrate the unlimited mutual benefits of public
and private sector cooperation in the INFOSEC arena—a story that CGH, with

| Augie Grant |
Augie Grant has worked in and around the high tech industry for the past
20 years, as an academic, industry consultant, and participant in the industry.
From 1989 through 1996, he headed the communication technology sequence
in the University of Texas College of Communication, leaving that position
to establish the Center for Mass Communications Research here at USC.
For the past 12 years, he has edited the leading textbook on communication
technology (currently preparing the 9th edition), and he has served as
a consultant for a wide range of high tech companies from Texas to Silicon
Valley. He also spent 1999-2000 working as Director of Research and
Entertainment Programming for a San Jose high-tech start-up company.
His research agenda focuses on the interface between technology and consumer
behavior, and his research has been published in every major journal in
the field of communication.
The subject he will address is quite simple--there are three ways to increase
employment in technology in the Midlands and the rest of the state:
Convince companies to move in, grow start-up companies, and increase the
utilization of technology among existing South Carolina businesses.
His presentation provides a brief roadmap for achieving all three, but
the emphasis is on the third (and the resulting economic impact of increasing
production and employment in the state). |
